Inversion Art + aShareX

“Democratized Ownership” through fractional investing, plus an exhibition at Maison Lune in Venice, CA, during Frieze Los Angeles

At Art Basel Miami Beach, Inversion Art met with Alan Snyder, founder of aShareX, the first fractional auction platform for fine art. Whereas other fractional art platforms buy works, divide them into shares, and allow people to buy and trade shares of the works, aShareX is an auction platform that allows interested parties to bid to buy a fraction of a lot. If enough fractional bidders are willing to pay the highest price for a lot, they can collectively win the auction and become part-owners of high-value assets. Alan let us know that the company had just completed their inaugural auction of a work by Ed Ruscha, which had over 400 bids in under 5 minutes and sold for just over its high estimate.

Like Inversion, the aShareX team had taken note of the fact that every other fractional platform was focused on blue chip works, which are relatively safe stores of value with only modest prospects for appreciation. What’s been inaccessible for fractional investors is access to contemporary works by living artists. The aShareX team was impressed by Inversion Art’s vision for investing in late emerging and mid-career artists, and further excited by the talented artists that our team was already working with. They suggested that our two Los Angeles-based companies could team up to bring fractional investors the first opportunity to access a highly curated, diversified pool of works by exceptional artists.

Servane Mary, Oxidation 2023 (2023). Brass metallic paint, dye oxide and silkscreen ink on canvas. 76 x 104 inches.

We found the idea of aShareX interesting: aShareX’s mission is to open up art ownership and investing to a wider audience of retail investors; Inversion Art’s mission is to give artists greater access to capital and management services. Naturally we took the opportunity directly to our artists, and they found the idea compelling.

As the vision for the auction came together, so did the idea of an exhibit where a handful of the works in the sale could be previewed. With help from Vajra Kingsley of the cultural production agency VHE.ART, Maison Lune, a unique gallery and townhouse in Venice, CA, stepped in to host the show, in partnership with pop-music icon Mashonda. (The work will be on display and available to visit by appointment from February 17th to March 7th.)

The sale, Contemporary Artists - Series 1, is scheduled for 5pm PDT on Thursday, March 7th, 2024, with pre-bidding open on Tuesday, March 5th. The lot includes 10 works by six of our artists.

We are incredibly excited to be partnering with aShareX to bring fractional art investing to the ultra contemporary market, and equally excited to be exhibiting our artists in partnership with Maison Lune, Mashonda, and Vajra. For more information on the auction, please visit the aShareX website.
